Thousands of such concerns arise everyday but considering what is happening, they all turn to dust as we go by living and doing the things that are the cause. Co-Incidence or Cultivated Thought
Choosing a side is not the issue here, it is the deception and degradation of original thought. It is evident that today, most of these young kids do not think much before believing and following.
Let’s understand it through something we all might have come across that too very recently, a girl in her early teens dressing like a Kardashian and using words like sassy, bougie and savage on social media. Reason is simple, she thinks it makes her feel validated. Similarly a 13 year old boy browsing sexual content and following similar concerning trends. Who do we blame here?
The Parents? The Schools? Social Media? Smart Phones? Or Technological advancements altogether. Let’s break it down from a Socio-Technical point of view.
We spend so much of our time watching things, scrolling through videos, reading bite-sized captions, flipping through visuals that seem to know exactly what we want. There’s something out there for everyone, and somehow, every piece of content finds its audience. Visual storytelling has always had power. It’s given space to art, ideas, and voices that might’ve gone unheard. But with so much of it, all the time, it’s easy to lose our own voice in the noise.
Today, our phones are the biggest window to the world. Why sit through an hour-long news debate when a 15-second video promises the “full story”? It’s become second nature—your hand automatically reaches for your phone. I’m writing this on mine, and chances are, you’re reading it on yours.
It’s not just about distraction anymore. It’s about how we’re slowly forgetting to pause, to think deeply, to question what’s being shown. When everything is reduced to a trend or a hot take, where does that leave room for curiosity?
How is This Cultivated Thought?
All the content we consume, the algorithm of these social media platforms track. They silently study your online behavioral pattern. The basis for this are your data, input and searches. The algorithm gathers the content that aligns with your preferences and presents it on a platter for you. Though this is a remarkable advancement when it comes to artificial intelligence and machine learning, it limits your brain to come in contact with contrasting opinions.
This limitation is leading to the death of dissent. Excess of similar content consumption is restricting our brains to experience new ideas. It is understandable that us as grownups know what’s good for us and what is not. It can also be accepted that you do face discomfort and varied opinions at your workplace or social circle.But what about these tender minds of kids in their teens and pre-teens who are glued to the screen and are scrolling all day relentlessly.

There are multiple reasons that make this concept an actual issue especially when it comes to kids.

If they keep consuming only the kind of content that is based on their liking, they’ll not come in contact with differing perspectives. It will take a toll on their cognitive abilities like critical thinking and reasoning. Dissonance leads a human to evaluate and respond to arguments. These abilities make a human question, assume and rethink the varied and uncomfortable opinions.

An echo chamber is an environment where a person only encounters information or opinions that reflect and reinforce their own. Echo chambers can create misinformation and distort a person’s perspective so they have difficulty considering opposing viewpoints and discussing complicated topics. As these social or OTT platforms only present the content that one likes, it creates an echo chamber for them. Believing and consuming similar thoughts and ideas only limits cognitive growth. As these content consumption increases, a detaching behavior develops. One starts isolating themselves from the society which often results in mental health issues like depression and anxiety

People do not like to be contradicted or challenged. It is a human behavioral tendency that, if we are not contradicted we can start believing that we and our thought process reigns supreme. Thoughts on a single subject are like a spectrum, there are a lot of colors that fall between black and white ends. But to understand and tolerate all of that, one needs to have a strong emotional quotient but that is degrading due to lack of human interaction caused by more time spent in front of screens. Darwin gave the theory of survival of the fittest and even he was shunned but when the time came he was validated. Galileo Galilei, the one who discovered the heliocentric was put on house arrest but these groundbreaking discoveries were complicated for that time and the world wasn’t ready.
Today, we are creating these complications for ourselves and our kids on our own. We are limiting our own exposure to newer things. One trend goes viral on social media and we all start following it. Taking an example, the world went crazy when ChatGpt could generate Ghibli style images. People willingly gave their data to an AI model to train and learn human behavior. ChatGPT had 1 million new users within 5 hours after these images became a trend.
Most of the people who followed the trend, weren’t even aware of Studio Ghibli’s existence before that. The people employed at Studio Ghibli spend hours creating those beautiful scenes and animations at their studio. This leads to degradation of creative thought and demeans the ones who are creating art spending hours on it.

Like I mentioned earlier, thoughts of different people on a subject are like a spectrum, there are a whole lot of colors in between white and black. For everything, that is not law, social media police get activated. You act a certain way, you are cool, you do not, you are uncool.
On social media you’re bound to have an opinion on everything, otherwise, how will you claim your space.One day Russia-Ukraine war is trending and the world suddenly starts talking about it. Another day because no-one is posting about it, it is not happening for you. This yes or no culture contracts that spectrum, and limits space.
